The book discusses possibilities and difficulties of cultural globalization as reflected in compositional processes exhibited by twentieth- and 21st-century art music in distinct historical contexts, its challenges, possibilities and aesthetic paradoxes. The interwovenness of musical relationships between East Asia and the West is the focus of the studies presented, sometimes expanded through discussions of music from other regions such as Africa, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Arab countries. The six chapters of this book feature analytical and comparative approaches to individual key musical works by a large variety of composers against the background of cultural and social history, thus developing perspectives for a globally conceived music historiography. Particular emphasis is devoted to the early history of intercultural musical encounter (chapters II,2; III,2-3) as well as to developments of the recent two to three decades (chapters II,3; III,4; IV-V), including the author's own compositional projects (chapter VI).
